Draft 2018 Ontario Team & Ontario Regatta Team Criteria

Please see attached the draft 2018 Ontario Team & Ontario Regatta Team criteria.  Please review and send any feedback to myself or your representative on the High Performance Committee (HPC) by Sunday, March 4, 2018.  Below is an overview of changes from 2017.

Changes to Ontario Team Criteria:
  • Men's Canoe events at Ontario Team Trials (OTT's) will be 500m and 1000m, instead of 2x 1000m used in 2017.
  • OHPSI Tier 2 support minimum performance will include a performance review by the HPC.
  • Addition of OHPSI Tier 2  support for Para athletes.
  • CKC NextGen program nomination has been removed from OHPSI Priority of Funding.
  • Athlete Profiles will include CKC's National Ranking List (used by CKC for Regatta Team and Sport Canada nomination), performance reviews at OTT's, NTT3 and National Championships, and on-water & off-water performances for Para athletes only.
  • Addition of Para OAAP Quest for Gold Half Cards.
  • Nomination to Development Team will include athletes nominated to any CKC or OCSRA Regatta Team.
Changes to Ontario Regatta Team Criteria:
  • The Regatta Team will only compete at the Canada Day/Canada Cup Regatta on June 30 - July 1 in Ottawa.  The tour will start on Thursday, June 28, 2018.
  • Men's Canoe events will include 500m and 1000m, Men's Kayak will include 200m, 500m and 1000m. 
  • The tie breaker will include priority given to the athlete with the higher combined ranking list points when two or more athletes reach the same level of discipline ranking.

OCSRA's Winter OCup 2 - Ski Race Results & Overall Winter OCup Series Points

65 participants completed in OCSRA's Winter OCup 2 - Ski Race this past Sunday in Gatineau Park, QC.  Lots of fresh snow made it difficult for the competitors who competed in either a 7km loop, 14km loop or the 22km loop.  

Congratulations to Rideau Canoe Club for winning the event.  Please see attached file for full results.

Winter OCup 2 - Ski Race Club Points:
  1. Rideau - 103 points
  2. Burloak - 87 points
  3. Carleton Place - 45 points
  4. Balmy Beach - 33 points
  5. Richmond Hill - 28 points
  6. Ottawa River - 25 points
  7. Mississauga & Pickering Rouge - 6 points
Thank you to our event sponsor Steve Tuttle and Kunstadt Sports (Kanata & Ottawa locations) who provided gear, prizes and race numbers.

Congratulations also goes out to Richmond Hill Canoe Club for being the overall OCSRA 2018 Winter OCup Series Champion.  The Winter OCup Series combines each clubs total points from the OCup 1 - Swim Meet and the OCup 2 - Ski Race.

RHCC wins the 1st annual Winter OCup Swim Meet

It was great to have over 100 participants compete in the 1st annual OCSRA Winter OCup 1 Swim Meet this past weekend.  From novice to
experienced swimmers (and everything in between) the athletes had a lot of fun in a friendly competition against their peers.

Please see attached final results.  Note times were not recorded for the U17 50m freestyle Heat #4, therefore, final ranking for the U17 50m
freestyle event was based on finals times not position of finish.  Congratulations to Richmond Hill for winning the competition.  The full Winter
OCup 1 points are listed below. 

The swim competition is the first of two Winter OCup events, the second event is our Nordic ski competition on February 4, 2018 in Ottawa.  
Similar to our summer OCup Series, we will combine each clubs total points from both Winter OCup events to determine the Winter OCup
Series Champion.  

Winter OCup 1 Swim Meet Points:
  1. Richmond Hill - 176 points
  2. Balmy Beach - 85 points
  3. Burloak - 63 points
  4. Pickering Rouge - 23 points
  5. Rideau - 22 points
  6. South Niagara - 19 points

OCSRA's Winter OCup 1 Swim Meet draw

Please see attached draw for tomorrow mornings swim meet. Participants can warm up in the pool from 7:00 am - 7:30 am.  

The event is located at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre's Competition Pool - 875 Morningside Ave., Toronto, ON M1C 0C7. 
Participants should enter from the main entrance (south entrance) and go to the front desk for instructions on how to enter the pool area.

OCSRA Winter OCup 1 Swim Meet Information & Registration package

Please see attached the information and registration package for our newly created Winter OCup Series swim meet. 

Hosted at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre on December 10, 2017, the event is open to all club members, parents, volunteers and alumni.  

Events include 50m, 200m and 300m freestyle.  

Club registration is due on Monday, December 4th by 5:00 pm.

OCSRA 2017 Review & 2018 Planning

Thank you to everyone who were able to attend our OCSRA AGM & Coaches meeting this past weekend.  Please see attached documents that were reviewed during the meetings and an outline of our next steps.

2017 Review:
  • see attached 2017 AGM Package - includes OCSRA Chair, OCSRA Treasurer, WOD Flag Officer, EOD Flag Officer and OCSRA Technical Director's report
  • see attached OCSRA Competition Review - a review of our current practices and recommendations for paddlers aged 15 and under
2018 Planning:
  • see attached draft 2018 OCSRA event schedule
Next Steps:
  • a technical committee has been created to assess the competition review findings and coach feedback to develop a unified approach to competition in Ontario.  To be completed by January 2018.
  • Criteria - coaches are asked to provide Ryan Blair with their feedback on the 2017 Ontario Team Programs criteria and suggestion for 2018 by December 15, 2017.  Draft 2018 criteria to be published by January 2018.

OCSRA AGM & Annual Coaches meeting - November 4, 2017

You are invited to participate in Ontario Canoe Sprint Racing Affiliates (OCSRA) Annual General Meeting (AGM) and annual coaches meeting on November 4, 2017 in Peterborough.  Please see attached our AGM notice and annual reports.  

Our AGM is intended for Board of Directors, club volunteers, coaches and parents.  We will review our 2017 programs and activities, as well as outline our target areas for 2018.  The AGM runs from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.

Our annual coaches meeting is intended for club coaches, managers and directors.  The focus for this year's meeting is to review our competition structure.  Bill Trayling will be presenting his observations from the 2017 season, coaches feedback from our competition review survey and provide suggestions for 2018.  The coaches meeting runs from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

OCSRA's Coach Development Projects

OCSRA is offering two (2) professional development opportunities for Ontario coaches, including our Apprentice Coach Program and our new Para Coach Mentorship Project.

The Apprentice Coach Program (ACP) goal is to increase the number of Ontario coaches achieving international success by providing an enhanced coach development plan for coaches working with LTAD Training to Train and Training to Compete stage athletes.  

The Para Coach Mentorship Project (PCMP) goal is to increase the number of Ontario Para athletes achieving international success by assisting in development of OCSRA's Para Talent Identification & Talent Transfer Program.

All interested coaches should submit their application(s) to Ryan Blair by Tuesday, October 31st, 2017.  Coaches may apply for both projects.

OCSRA's draft 2017-2018 Ontario Team Program nominations

Please see attached the draft list of athletes who have been nominated for the 2017-2018 Ontario Team Program.  Final team nominations must be approved by our Board of Directors at our Annual General Meeting on November 4, 2017.

The Ontario Team Program offers three (3) types of support:  Ontario High Performance Sport Initiative (“OHPSI”) program, Quest for Gold - Ontario Athlete Assistance Program (“OAAP”), and Ontario Development Team.   

Athletes nominated where selected using OCSRA’s 2017 Ontario Team Selection Criteria which was approved by the OCSRA Board of Directors and applied by the Selection Committee (HPC).  Note:  Quest for Gold - Ontario Athlete Assistance Program (“OAAP”) Para athlete nominations have been deferred until December 1, 2017.
