OCSRA Apprentice Coach Program 2012  

Purpose:

The OCSRA Apprentice Coach Program is an opportunity for developing club coaches to gain high performance coaching level experience by participating in the Ontario Team Development Camp in Florida, the 2012 CKC Coach the Trials project and the 2012 North American Race Series.  The project is an interactive, mentorship, professional development opportunity for coaches to observe athletes and procedures at a provincial training camp, major national competition, and major international competition.

 

Dates:

The coaches would participate in 3 separate events with OCSRA during the spring/summer. 

·         Either the Ontario High Performance Training Camp in Tampa, FL (Feb 20-April 14, 2010) or the Ontario Development Camp in Ocala, FL (March 8th-30, 2012) for a minimum of 1 week (hopefully 2 weeks).

·         Coach the Trials program offered by Canoe Kayak Canada from June 22-24, 2012, during National Team Trials.

·         NARS competitions and camp June 30-July 14, 2012.

 Ontario Team Florida Training Camp

At the camp coaches would have the opportunity to be mentored by Joel Hazzan the Ontario Provincial Team Coach, or Ryan Blair  (CSCO- Ontario High Performance Sports Initiative Coach and  Eastern Ontario Division Coach) or Adam Oldershaw (CSCO- Ontario High Performance Sports Initiative Coach and Western Ontario Division Coach).  Other Competition Development certified coaches as well as former national team coaches such as Igor Nikitovic and Peter Martinek will also be on hand to help mentor the apprentice coaches at the camp. 

 Coaches will also have the opportunity to:

·         Observe/Lead workouts during the camp

·         Participate in video review with the mentor coaches

·         Observe mentor coaches on a day to day basis during a major training camp·         Work with high level athletes on a day to day basis during a major training camp

 Coach The Trials:

The coach the trials program objectives are for developing coaches to:

 q  Gain national and international experience by attending, and observing a major National Event (under International Canoe Federation rules),  the National Team Trials

q  Observe, collect and analyze race performance data on top sprint canoe-kayak athletes in the country

q  Observe the Canadian National Team, as well as other National athletes during their training, warm-up / preparation and races

q  Learn from other high-level Canadian club and National Team coaches and CKC’s Integrated Support Team.

q  Learn and gain experience in proper race analysis.

q  Interact, share ideas and compare observation and data.

q  Gain technical knowledge

 NARS Race Series:

The last part of the program will involve the coaches participating in the North American Race Series (NARS) and Ontario Team Training camp affiliated with the race series as apprentice coaches.  NARS is a series of 3 international competitions that are happening in Canada and the USA in 2012.  The first is the Canada Day Regatta in Ottawa from June 30-2, the second regatta is the Lake Placid Invitation Regatta in Lake Placid, NY from July 6-8, and the third is the Welland International Regatta (Test event for the 2013 Junior and U23 World Championships to be held in Welland, ON) from July 13-15.  Teams from North and South America, Europe, Africa and Australia/ New Zealand have been invited to all 3 of these regattas making it a true international event.  OCSRA will be choosing a U17 Team as well as a pre-Canada Games Team to compete at these events.  Before the Canada Day Regatta and between the competitions, athletes will be involved in a training camp with Ontario Team Coaches.  The location of the training camps is yet to be finalized, but will likely be in Carleton Place and Burloak.  The apprentice coaches will be expected to participate in the training camps, and act as coaches for the NARS events. 

 

Outcomes / Expectations:

·         Participate in all workshops / seminars, and debriefs

·         Complete the various assignments or observation/analysis forms

·         Make a report that would be shared with other coaches in your region, at a regional / provincial conference, through Paddles Up or a regional / provincial website or newsletter

·         Some of the assignments from Coach the Trials may be used towards Comp-Dev certification (analyze performance).

 

Prerequisites:

·         coaches must be ELCC Certified

·         coaches have not coached athletes at any National Team Trials, but aspire to coach at that level

·         coaches are currently working with athletes who will eventually race at National Team Trials

·         coaches demonstrating an ability and desire to further their coaching education

·         priority will be given to those coaches with no previous National Team Trials experience

 

Fees:

Participants may be required to cover their own travel and hotel for Coach the Trials.  Participants may also be asked to apply for various grants to help OCSRA offset the costs of this project.

o    Level of athletes you are currently working with

o    Your Coaching Goals and Objectives in the next 5 years

o    How you feel this mentorship project will help in your development as a coach

 

 Application Deadline:

Interested applicants should submit their resume and cover letter by Monday, January 30th, 2012.  A maximum of 3 coaches will be selected for this project, ideally 1 from WOD, 1 from EOD and 1 from Northern Ontario.

New this year, in order to register for the ELCC course you must have already completed your Competition Part A Module and the Teaching and Learning Module of Part B.



Reimbursement Bursary Available for ELCC & Competition Development Certifications

Exercises to Prevent Injury for Canoe/Kayak Athletes
